Species & Best Seasons

  • Walleye

    • Peak seasons: Spring post-spawn; continues through summer and fall.

    • Gear & Tactics: Medium-light rod (8 ft), slow trolling at 1–1.75 mph using Flicker Shad or Rapala Deep Tail Diver. 30 lb braid with 8–10 lb fluorocarbon leader. Use dipsy divers, bottom bouncers, or vertical jigs with soft plastics.

  • Northern Pike

    • Peak seasons: Early summer and fall; also active through the season.

    • Gear & Tactics: Medium-heavy to heavy casting rod, braid 20–50 lb, steel or fluoro leader. Favorite lures include spoons (Daredevle, Little Cleo), spinners (#3–5 Mepps, blue fox), swimbaits, and X‑Rap Magnum if deep trolling.

  • Muskellunge (Musky)

    • Peak seasons: Opens 3rd Saturday in June; trophy season in fall (Sept–Nov).

    • Gear & Tactics: 8 ft heavy/medium-heavy baitcaster with 80–100 lb braid + leader. Lures: large spinnerbaits (Reef Runner Magnum, Buchertail), crankbaits (Super Shad Rap), topwater plugs. Bring pliers, jaw spreader, rubber net.

  • Smallmouth Bass

    • Peak seasons: Late May–mid-June (spawn) and early fall.

    • Gear & Tactics: Medium-action spinning rod, 8–12 lb mono/braid. Use jerkbaits, tubes, grubs, spinners, flukes, stickbaits.

  • Lake Trout

    • Peak seasons: Spring (shallow ambush), summer (deep jigging).

    • Gear & Tactics: Medium rod, 8–12 lb line. Use lead-head jigs (3/8–1/2 oz) and tubes in white/chartreuse. Spoons like Little Cleo or Daredevle work as well.

  • Whitefish & Yellow Perch

    • Present throughout; perch are great for light tackle and spoons. Whitefish favor deeper areas post-ice-out.

 Nearby Accessible Lakes

  • Bowden & Long Lakes: Better for quiet pike, bass, walleye, limited run access via Indian chain.

  • Canyon Lake: Trophy musky, walleye, pike; requires lodge access or portage.
